Assistant Program Director of the Hematology/Oncology Fellowship
Dr. Kostas Arnaoutakis is a hematologist and oncologist at the Winthrop P. Rockefeller Cancer Institute at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences. He is an Associate Professor of Medicine in the Department of Internal Medicine, Division of Medical Oncology at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences and associate program director of the Hematology/Oncology Fellowship.
Why Dr. Arnaoutakis thinks this program is important…
I have been at UAMS since 2009 and also serve as a coordinator and instructor for our hematology/oncology fellowship simulation program. I have been interested in communication skills in healthcare for a long time due to my experiences as a physician, an educator and as a user of the healthcare system. As a medical oncologist, excellent communications skills are critical to providing individualized and quality care. The mutual trust, respect and partnership promoted by good communication between physicians and patients are a fundamental aspect of patient care, yet most physicians have not received training in communication. As a medical oncologist, on a daily basis, I have the opportunity to incorporate communication training that I have received in difficult conversations with patients and family members. Communication training in health care is not only important because it helps patients, but also because it allows clinicians to feel more connected and fulfilled. I feel strongly that this campus wide initiative will help everybody regardless of their current communication skills level.
