MASTER: Meet Your Facilitators

Mary Cantrell, M.A.
Executive Director for Centers for Simulation Education

Ms. Cantrell started at UAMS in 1993 in the Standardized Patient Program. She studied doctor/patient relationships in her graduate work at UALR and received a master’s degree in Interpersonal and Organizational Communications.  In 1997 the first Clinical Skills Center was built and she has gone on to assist in building 4 other centers and works with an incredible staff of 13.  She has worked with the National Board of Medical Examiners, and done consulting implementing new programs at the University of Tennessee, Memphis, Louisiana State University in Shreveport, University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, and Princess Nora University in Saudi Arabia.  She is the founding president of the Association of Standardized Patient Educators an international organization that serves Standardized Patient Programs all over North America and Europe.

Why Mary thinks this program is important…

I am honored to work with the new MASTER’s Communication program at UAMS and hope it will be incorporated into other healthcare student curriculum in the future. I have worked with healthcare students since 1994 on how to most effectively talk to patients and each other in a way that maximize the healthcare experience for everyone.
