Our Purpose
The goal of this association is to support the advancement of the University by providing individual and collective support to the University and Colleges. This group of renowned individuals assist in an advisor capacity to current, as well as prospective members on matters of mutual interest.
In seeking to achieve these goals, the Emeritus Faculty Group consult on a regular basis. Meeting quarterly to discuss and make recommendations to the University on any matters they deem appropriate. There are no dues.
Membership as an Emeritus Faculty includes all persons, at any rank on any academic pathway, retiring after distinguished service with their respective college and department.
This status is not routinely awarded, but represents an honor for a career characterized by the highest academic abilities and devotion to the advancement of the UAMS.

How to become an Emeritus faculty member
In order to be considered for emeritus status, an individual must be appropriately recommended by his/her Department Chair and the Dean and meet at least one of the following conditions:
- The retiring individual is age 65 or older and has at least five years of continuous service to the University.
- The retiring individual is age 62 or older and has at least ten years of continuous service to the University.
- The retiring individual has at least 20 years of continuous service to the University.
- The retiring individual has elected to retire early under the early retirement provisions of Administrative Memorandum 430.2.
Who reviews and approves Emeritus request?
In order for emeritus status to be conferred by the Board of Trustees, the individual’s request for Emeritus status shall be reviewed by the following parties:
- College Promotion & Tenure Committee
- College Dean
- UAMS Chancellor
- University of Arkansas System President
What is the timeline and process for Emeritus request?
The President will receive recommendations prior to the five yearly Board of Trustees meetings, from the Chancellor. These meetings occur in September, November, January, March, and May. Emeritus packets must be submitted to the U of A agenda office one month before the meeting.
